Battlefield 3

Unread postby Gav » Fri Oct 28, 2011 11:14 am

Hello fellow clan associates.

As you may, or may not (live under a rock) be aware, Battlefield 3 has been released.
I have become very aware that many of the clans members, and also community members, will be purchasing Battlefield 3.

So I put forth this idea to you, we expand our clan, to include Battlefield 3. This should include our very own 64-man server (in my opinion).

I have conversed with our Grandma about this, and he has told me that it is a possibility, if we have enough support within the clan. I have also volunteered myself to be the leader of a possible Battlefield 3 section within the clan.

Now you may be wondering, why do we need to expand into Battlefield 3?
For these people, I have prepared a short list of pros and cons to try and convince you that this is a smart move.

Pros
- More possible members
- More possible donators and therefore money for the clan
- More places for the clan to enjoy killing people

Cons
- Servers are expensive
- Not all clan members will want to play battlefield 3

For one of the disadvantages (server), I have come up wit a short term solution.
I could start a kickstarter page to try and secure payment for the first few months of a server, offering admin capabilities and reserved slots as incentive to donators. Also, I am offering £20 of my own money, per month, to going towards paying for a server.

Please respond to this thread and let us know if you think this is a good or bad idea, and/or if you would be willing to support this.

Might be a good idea indeed. There are a lot of players there that would like to join a clan, but can't because of skill requirements or minimum amount of play time.

The prices for BF3 server at KillerCreation (the company were the dedicated box for CSS is hosted) are £0.80 (Incl VAT £0.96) Per Slot.

Example 64 slot pricing:
- 1 month: £51.20+VAT (£61.44 incl VAT)
- 3 Months 10% discount: £138.24+VAT (£165.89 incl VAT)
- 6 months 15% discount: £261.12+VAT (£313.34 incl VAT)
- 12 months 20% discount: £491.52+VAT (£589.83 incl VAT)

For official ranked servers there is a restriction though. Official ranked servers require at least 16 slots and FTP access is prohibited.

I for one would love this, I would be willing to dontate a little extra for this, especially as most servers I try and join are full by the time I click join! So a reserved slot would be orgasmic!!

If anyone willing to donate towards this could please state how much exactly they would be prepared to do so please.

I would look to do it on a 1 month rolling basis with a view to anyone who states they will donate being able to donate for a minimum of 3 months (if it doesn't work out then we can cancel server and any additional subs).

Without firm commitments to this cost, a server will not get off the ground. INC is only just close to breaking even for our CSS and website commitments, so we cannot spare funds from there. If we were to do this I'd setup another subscription link so that people could state what game they were donating for.

I'd also urge anyone who donates currently to not forgo any donations to the css/website side of things in lieu of this as it would be difficult for us to continue as a whole, instead please ensure your commitment is in addition to. I hope you can understand this bit ^_^

AFAIK - there is currently no way to have reserved slots on a BF3 server - it's only just been released and the admin mods etc are all catching up. The most talked about on is called procon - but that's not got the feature as of yet. Rest assured, we will enable any customisation desired and wanted as soon as able to - reserved slots would certainly be one of the first.

Personally, I'm going to have a play on BF3 later hopefully and see whether I like it enough. If I do so like it I might be willing to donate to this specific cause also, probably to the tune of £5 a month.

I'm all for INC expanding into other games - I however personally have no intention of getting BF3.

I also pose the question...how many people will be getting MW3 as well as BF3. They compete heavily with each other - and in a similar fashion to the consoles...people will just jump between each.

Hosting a server would require a fairly substantial donator base from the looks of it - but if we can do it then great :)

In short: Great idea - just concerned about the longevity of such a project - and the cost incurred.

The donations required would be either around the £35 or £65 mark (we'd go with www.killercreation.co.uk) dependant upon how many slots (32 or 64). This would be a monthly amount and it's why I'd be asking for people to state an amount and the fact they'd be willing to proffer it for at least 3 months. That way it's long enough to see if it's working out and to give it a chance to grow and stand on it's own feet. If it wasn't to work out we could end early and cut the losses.

I'm not sure that MW will compete for the same people as BF this time round. BF3 is a substantial game and is heavily based on multiplayer, whereas I think the newer CoD is looking to be better a single-player and not as good with multiplayer. Either way, I believe it was BF that was declared the upper hand in the game shows this year. It won't matter though - if it manages to stand on it's own for a while it'll allow people to jump between games - if we're established then hopefully we can get the server to fill itself.

If anyone can find something that does this, feel free to point me in that direction. The only one I could find earlier was the one I mentioned above which seemed to be the most popular for BF games, it's due to get those features but does not yet contain them - they say they work with the publishers too.

I'd say 64 because most people will want to play in the big games, I feel like a 32 player server wouldn't be rammed unless there was an organised event :/
