High ping/latency

Unread postby Andy-No1 » Thu Oct 11, 2012 8:30 pm

Hi all, right the past few days i have been getting a ping on Italy/Office/Dust2 servers of around 80-105, server list latency is showing 100-120 before this all was fine i was getting a 10-20 ping and latency was showing for servers was around 30-40, i contacted virgin media tonight and spent over an hour on phone trying to solve this issue as i thought it was my end, after many tests and tracert google all was fine, on speed test i get what i should 60mb+ ping 15.
Everything is fine with my set up so i joined about 10 different server with mid-high latency and got a ping of 30-40 which was expected, i joined an american server and got a ping of 65-75.
I'm not over technical with this kind of thing so any advise would be a great help as if my ping gets any higher on our servers i will get kicked and thats not good :(

Yeah I used to get it on Virgin Media too. Random latency spikes of like 300ms :(

Virgin Media have issues with latency to the various datacentres and LINX exchange in London. they've known about this for ages and are still unable to resolve it. The problem is not our servers, nor the datacentre. It's Virgin not sorting out their peering nodes to LINX. :(

I get this too sometimes as am on virgin too (also have 02 connection I switch to to check ^_^)

Yeh me and my mate, who lives on the other side of the city, tried to play bf3 last night. Both on VM and we were both getting 90-150, unplayable. I am unfortunately locked into contact, seriously considering getting a second line with a different provider.

High ping/latency

Yeah - just to point out that this will cause issues with a wide variety of services requiring good latency and is not restricted to one set of servers or providers either. It affects a wide amount of services that come off LINX for those customers and the majority of uk GSPs are based in the data enters fed by it.

It seems to be after about 20:OO Hrs the latency seems to rise, at 6pm it was 44 and my ping was in the 20's now its 21:03 and server latency is 114 so i know my ping will be 80-90+ pain in the back side

Yeah I found Virgin are generally fine until peak times; then they throttle like there's no tomorrow

I'm with BT. Never had any problem I couldn't sort out myself. Speeds and latency are pretty damn consistent throughout the day. Just a shameless recommendation. ;D

I would go back BT but I cant get over 1MB with them. Having 120MB on Virgin is a BIG difference even if I have to suffer a little lag on CSS now and then.

I have to stay with virgin as BT say im to far from the exchange to get over 8mb, so i will suffer a little lag to keep my 60mb especially as there are 4 of us using it here.

I live in a village so no fibre optic for me = Virgin a crap deal. Figured since I'd be getting crap anyways I'd go for the cheapest.

Talk Talk have exceeded my expectations, have had them for a few months and have had a steady download performance of around 1.8 Mb/s. I'm sure their customer service will be dire but until I need it I can't complain about them :)

Hi guys, sorry for the thread resurrection but it looks like I could be suffering the same problem! :(

The last week or two I've been having a high ping (110-130) at peak times across all the INC servers which leads to me getting kicked all the time :(
I've tried some other servers and on some of them my ping has been fine but on some it has also been high.
I found this thread from a couple of years ago and it seems that Virgin media (Who I am with) are the problem? Is this still likely to be the case? Thanks for any help! :)
